Building Surveyor in 1986 after studying Architecture at Brighton to
Intermediate Stage of the R.I.B.A.
Richard has worked in conservation since 1979 and has attended conservation courses with The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, English Heritage, West Dene and elsewhere.
He has developed a strong awareness of the conservation philosophy of Historic Structures and is able to apply his experience to provide in depth investigations and surveys identifying well reasoned proposals with priorities for future capital and maintenance works. He has a proven record of designing and managing conservation works on site with tight cost control over project expenditure. He is on the RICS list of Accredited Conservation Surveyors.
He
worked between 1979 and 1992 with The National Trust
in the Northumbria and Southern Regions where as Regional Building
Manager, he was responsible for the conservation, repair and service
installation projects in the whole portfolio of properties controlled
by the region including many Historic Houses and other Listed Buildings
and Scheduled Monuments. He was also involved in the restoration of
Uppark House after the fire.
During this period he was instrumental in introducing a full planned maintenance system for all buildings and structures in the Regions and for computerising the building records.
After
leaving the National Trust he was subsequently employed as General Manager
with Cliveden Conservation Workshop a private company
specialising in stone, plaster and terracotta conservation on both Historic
Buildings and private and public owned sculpture collections.
Whilst with Cliveden he was responsible for the day to day management of the projects organising resources and financial control with an annual turnover of £1 million.
He left the company in 1995 to set up in private practice in Petersfield operating throughout the South of England.
